UV Sense introduces compact wearable technology for proactive skin protection.

Over the course of our eight years of collaboration with L’Oréal, we have worked together to push the boundaries of beauty, health, and new technologies. L’Oréal’s UV Sense is a groundbreaking wearable that addresses the growing global concern of skin cancer, empowering users to track and manage their sun exposure in real time.

Skin cancer rates doubled between 2005 and 2015 across all skin tones, highlighting the urgent need for solutions that help prevent overexposure to harmful UV rays. L’Oréal challenged us to create a discreet, battery-free sensor that could seamlessly integrate into users’ lives. The result was the UV Sense, an ultra-compact wearable that uses energy-harvesting technology to monitor UV exposure.

The UV Sense’s versatility in form makes it adaptable and unobtrusive. It can be worn as a bracelet, clipped onto clothing, or even adhered to a fingernail. Encased in a sleek plastic bubble, the wafer-thin sensor communicates directly with the user’s smartphone, providing real-time UV data and reminders to reapply sunscreen based on exposure levels.

Customization played a key role in the UV Sense’s design. By offering various patterns and styles, L’Oréal ensured the sensor could align with users’ personal aesthetics, making it a wearable accessory people would want to use. This balance of functionality and fashion elevated the UV Sense beyond a health tool, transforming it into a lifestyle product.

Through its compact, energy-efficient design and focus on user well-being, the UV Sense represents L’Oréal’s commitment to innovation. It empowers individuals to take proactive steps in protecting their skin, demonstrating how wearable technology can address critical health concerns while blending seamlessly into daily life.
