PROTEUS™
PROTEUS™ is an underwater research station, designed as the ocean’s equivalent of the International Space Station.
Pioneering underwater research with a collaborative environment for scientists, universities, and private companies.
When Fabien Cousteau, grandson of the legendary explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, set out to design Proteus, he envisioned a station that would solve the long-standing challenges of ocean research—time limits underwater, decompression, and surface weather conditions. He came to Fuseproject with a clear goal: create a space where scientists, universities, and private companies could collaborate in a comfortable, efficient, and modular environment, much like the International Space Station (ISS).
We designed Proteus to have two-stories, optimized for functionality and adaptability. The lower level houses the submarine dock and core research facilities, while the upper level offers communal spaces, dormitories, and a communications hub designed for educational outreach and virtual tours.
Research labs are positioned around the station’s perimeter, with modular configurations that can expand or adapt to evolving scientific needs, echoing the flexibility of the ISS.
The design not only supports extended stays for researchers but also bridges the gap between scientific discovery and public engagement. By providing spaces for education and live virtual connections, Proteus invites the world to participate in ocean exploration, inspiring greater understanding and conservation efforts.
Currently, the Proteus project is progressing with a letter of intent (LOI) for a site off the coast of Curaçao, and fundraising is underway to bring this ambitious vision to life. Once realized, Proteus will set a new standard for underwater exploration, blending cutting-edge design with a mission to advance research and protect our oceans.
