CoVent-19 Competition Round 1: A Rapidly Deployable Mechanical Ventilator
The CoVent-19 Challenge is fostering the innovation of a rapidly deployable and viable mechanical ventilator for patients with COVID-19 related ventilator-dependent lung injury. The goal is to close the gap between actual resources and those in need around the world. Efforts to flatten the curve through social distancing, good hygiene, testing, and quarantine of infected individuals will curb the exponential rise in new cases, however we still expect to face severe shortages in hospital capacity. fuseproject’s goal in participating in this design challenge is to help deliver an improved ventilator design that can rapidly expand the capacity of hospitals.
Introducing: InVent
For round 1, we delivered a pneumatically-driven ventilator, optimized for a COVID-19 health care context and can be assembled in under 4 hours. The concept leverages the ubiquitous IV pole to enable speedy manufacturability, adjustable placement in use, easy transport, and simple storage.
Designed for safe and accurate delivery
Ventilation, while lifesaving, introduces additional dangers of lung injury from volume or pressure trauma – especially true for long term use of bag valves (also known as ambu bag) as a ventilation device which present the potential for air valve collapse. A pneumatic valve ventilation system offers the safest delivery of lifesaving ventilation.
Optimized for installation, transport, and organized storage
A simple attachment mechanism for variably sized poles allow for easy adjustment of height for user comfort. The ventilator detaches from the poles for space-saving storage and organization. A tube support arm improves the angle of intubation and reduces the chance of an accidental disconnection. The cable management back cover provides a clean storage solution for the cable while also hiding the pole clamps.
Intuitive navigation and readability
The tilted ergonomic interface includes a simple rotary dial for menu and screen navigation and making incremental adjustments, as well as buttons for boosting oxygen and silencing the alarm. The UI offers valuable wavelength monitoring for pressure, flow, and volume with simplified inputs and outputs grouped together by distinguishing colors. InVent’s UI meets World Wide Web (W3C) AAA grade contrast ratios, and works across color blindness spectrums.
