Now in their fifth year, the winners of Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards were announced today, honoring projects and designers that are actively engaged and committed to solving health and climate crises, social injustice, or economic inequality.
Our VOX Ventilator, designed at the peak of the COVID-19 rise last year to support the shortage as cases ramped up, has been honored as one of Fast Company’s most inventive, innovative, and impactful products to emerge from 2020. Thank you Fast Company!
In June of 2020, fuseproject, in partnership with CIONIC, a medical device and technology start-up, and several independent mechanical engineering (ME) consultants, developed VOX, a pneumatically driven ventilator that costs less than $1,000 to produce, takes under four hours to assemble, and can be mounted on the ubiquitous IV pole for portability and cord management. The final outcome? An easily assembled, high-precision form factor that’s adaptable to various healthcare settings.
Currently in the engineering process, VOX is slated to launch in a Nigeria-based pilot program following regional regulatory approval in partnership with the African Federation for Emergency Medicine. AFEM employs over 2,000 emergency medicine clinicians across 26 countries in Africa.
We are proud to announce that our ventilator design will be open-sourced to the public as part of an effort to provide critical, life-saving medical equipment to global populations in need.
